We’re Backing You, Eagles
Team Boasts Good Record
Going into the Sectionals, we must remember whatever the outcome may be the 1966-1967 season has been a very successful campaign! This season’s team has compiled the best record in recent years, finishing the season with an 18 and 2 record. The Eagles won the WIC Title along with the County Championship. Also we were the only team in the county to win a Holiday Tourney. From the fifteen schools in the Western Indiana Conference, 3 of our Eagles, Howard Williams, Paul Seibenmorgan and Mike Turner who was voted the Most Valuable Player, dominated the WIC first team chosen by the Tribune-Star selection committee. Another Eagle, Tom Gillis, recived Honorable Mention.
However, the big test is before us! For again this year we will have to play four games to win the Sectional Crown. Our Regionals and Semi-State are as tough, as they have been in many years. Getting to Hinkle Fieldhouse is no easy task, but if desire is worth anything you can count on the EAGLES!

Just Asking
By Jeff Vaught
If someone who had never been to a Garfield basketball game were to come to one, he would think by the response of the fans to the referees’ calls that they know everything there is to know about basketball. So as an interesting feature, I asked some of our student critics their interpretation of a few basketball terms.
ASSIST … When one player helps another off the floor. (An assist is one player passing the ball to another who makes the basket.)
TRAVEL…When a team plays away from home. (Traveling is walking with the ball.)
DOUBLE DRIBBLE … Bouncing the ball tgwice in one place. Bouncing two balls at once. (Double Dribble is bouncing the ball, picking it up, and bouncing it again.)
As you can see, many Garfield students’ understanding of basketball terminology leaves much to be desired. Although these answsers are only humourous guesses, they show how little many people really know about basketball. Yet it is the people who know the least about what they’re objecting to who voice their opinions most strongly against the referees’ calls. So lets all cooperate with the cheerleaders and untie our spirit to make it the strongest possible. Instead of directing our yelling against the referees, let’s all yell for the EAGLES.
In a special assembly, Mr. William J. Gehron, Public Affairs Officer in the Bureau of European Affairs, spoke to the student body on the world situation.
BOYS TO DRIBBLE ON 7-6 JOURNEY
No they’re not a chorus line?!!! They are helping to boost the spirit at G.H.S. by carrying on the tradition started last year, by dribbling the purple and white basketball to the arena tonight. The project is being sponsored by 6 “Food For Thought” seniors. They are from (L to R) Tom Torrens, Ron Agresta, Marty Moore, Tim Nichols, Dan Callecod and Jim Terry.
They will leave Garfield at approx. between 5:30 and 6:00 tonight.
WIT’S END
By Linda McCain
On the insistance of some of my friends, I decided to attend my first basketball game. I went to the library and studied the rules of the game so that I could understand what was happening. The night finally came and I was eager to watch the Eagles produce Hoosier Hysteria.
Soon after I arrived the players were called onto the floor. To say the least, I was shocked! They were clad in very scant T-shirts and shorts, leaving their shoulders and knees entirely exposed. This was extremely embarrassing to one who has led a sheltered life.
The game began and proceeded at a rapid pace and I was thrilled with the skill and speed of the Eagle’s team. One thing that bothered me, however, was the little conversations that the coach kept having with the players I believe there is a time and a place for everything and I thought it was very rude of them to stop in the middle of the game, and stand around and gossip in a little huddle. Besides, I can’t take people who tell secrets.
I noticed there were two men that I felt sorry for. These weird little fellows were dressed in very unmod striped shirts and were obviously escapees from the “funny farm.” They keep running around blowing Crackerjack whistles and making stupid hand gestures. Often the crowd got disgusted with their antics and booed them. I thought this was in very bad taste. We should all try to understand people like these who have “low” mentality and humor them. Afterall nobody is perfect.
As a whole, though, the evening was wonderful. The Eagles not only won the game, but provided exciting entertainment. I have vowed never to miss another game now. So, I’ll see you at the Sectionals!!!!!!!!!
QUACKER BOX
WE WONDER:
. . . If Susie Freed didn’t pawn her “Nickel?”
. . . If our own Goldenb Firl hasn’t been seen with Dum Dum lately?
. . . If Howard Williams really went to an after “five” affair?
. . . If you would believe a dress six inches above your knee? – - Marilyn Heustis would!
. . . If the Sophomore’s ambition is to become trashpickers?
. . . If everyone won’t miss the three “C” teachers?
. . . A memo to Karen Page – What is the real Ron Hunter like?
. . . If Bonnie Rector didn’t lose a Valentine?
. . . If Sue Turner hasn’t been lookingfor bigger (and taller) things in life?
. . . How Lowell Touchton earned the name “Softy?”
. . . If E.J. Bozarth isn’t dedicated – or is whipped a better word?
. . . If Tom Torrens and Dan Fisher didn’t go Bear hunting.
. . . If a lot of the G.H.S. students aren’t migrating to Florida for Spring vacation?
. . . How well Jerry Deahl knows the little dirt road by Stop 16?
. . . If R.V.A. isn’t dating Linda Lee?
. . . If the only thing safe with Tom Gillis is his guitar?
. . . If Steph Salter has found the home team basket yet?
. . . If everyone isn’t proud of the Hi-Y for winning the basketball championship again this year?
. . . If Rudy Vuchinich hopes he will win his quarter bet?
. . . If Mike Turner really sleeps with his basketball?
. . . If all of the colleges aren’t keeping the Post Office busy with letters to our basketball boys?
. . . If Mr. McDonald and the team and everyone at G.H.S. isn’t looking forward to a ten game schedule now that our regular season is over?
Cheerleaders Commend Fans For Boosting GHS Spirit
“Now here’s a cheer, we’d like to do, to thank, Eagle fans, All of you.” The may not seem the same, but it is our way, as the varsity cheerleaders, to express the the feeling of appreciation for the loyalty and enthusiasm, you, the student body, have shown throughout the year.
At camp we were told to always remember – the cheerleader are merely the boice of the fans. At every game this becomes evident. When your “voice” is low and disinterested ours is the same way. But when the “voice” of Garfield is loud and wildly enthusiastic, we can feel it and we respond to it!
We have had a great season and you have shown all year that Garfield is truely the “HOME OF THE SPIRIT OF 7-6.” In tourney play, spirit is very important! For the Sectionals serve as a climax to our season and to every fan here at G.H.S.
All in all, we would like to say; continue your great work, especially the pep block, and keep your “voice” proud so we can guide our Purple Eagles to a Sectional Victory!!!!!!!
COACH McDONALD HAS GREAT RECORD
Coach McDonald is rated as one of the greatest basketball coaches in the entire state. At least that is the opinion of everyone here at G.H.S. But this opinion isn’t entirely a result of school loyalty, for Mr. MacDonald has a coaching record which every coach in the state can admire.
Coach MacDonald played basketball at Fontanet High School before going to Indiana State. At State he played on the barsity and started every game for four years. He became a Little All American and led the Sycamores to the Small College National Championship in 1951.
His first coaching job was at Salem High School, where he coached the varsity for six years. The next two years he was head coach at Clinton High School. Then he went to Columbus High School where he coached the B-team for six years. During the time he was there, Columbus was rated first in the state and went to the state finals in Indianapolis. Several members of this Columbus more points than any other team in the state. Among their many achievements is their victory at the Holiday Tournay in Columbus over two rated teams. Because of the fine performance of his team, Mr. McDonald was named Coach of the Year by the selection committee of the Tribune-Star.
So again Mr. McDonald and the Eagles have completed a successful season and we know Coach McDonald will make a proud showing in this year’s tournament and in the years to come.
As you can see, the pride we have in our coach is justified by this fine record. But there is a better way to judge Mr. McDonald’s coaching ability other than by his past record. All one has to do is to watch our champion Eagles play to know the man behind them is a champion coach.

PURPLE EAGLES IN ACTION
ATHLETE’S FEATS
By Scott Williams
Garfield has had so much written about them this year that finding something new to write is like trying to create a new adjective to use about Lew Alcindor. The main thing the Eagles must do is keep their hat sizes down to normal; however I personally think this will be no problem.
This year’s crew is a TEAM of stars, not just a few. All season long when one Eagle has had a bad night, another has always been able to step in to carry the load. Garfield’s starting guards, Howard Williams and Mike Turner, have been given well deserved credit all year long for carrying the load, but we must consider that Jerry Deahl and Dan Fisher would probably be starting on any other team in the city.
Garfield’s front line is very powerful, and has only been out-rebounded once all season. But the lieup has been juggled so much it’s often a question as to who Coach McDonald will call on to carry the forward wall’s chores.
As easily seen, one main reason for our team’s fine showing this year is the fact that the are a team the fact that the Eagles are a TEAM of STARS!

You did a great job restoring the paper. In the Quacker Box: If R.V.A. isn’t dating Linda Lee? That was me when I was going with Linda Lee Neese (68). Funny it’s still true, my wife’s name is Linda Lee… not same girl.
